In most cases, yes. If your dental plan includes an orthodontic benefit, it typically covers Invisalign® the same way it covers braces, because insurers treat clear aligners as orthodontic treatment, not a separate category. What changes the number is the details of your plan: your orthodontic lifetime maximum, the percentage covered, any age limits, and waiting periods. At Elite Orthodontics Group in San Diego, we verify your benefits for you and combine them with flexible financing so cost is never the reason you put off a healthier smile.
Does insurance treat Invisalign differently from braces?
Usually not. From an insurer’s point of view, Invisalign and braces are two ways to deliver the same thing: orthodontic treatment. So if your plan has an orthodontic benefit, that benefit generally applies to Invisalign just as it would to metal or clear braces. A few older or very limited plans single out aligners, which is why it always pays to read the orthodontic section of your specific policy or let our team check it for you.
How orthodontic insurance benefits actually work
Orthodontic coverage behaves differently from the rest of your dental plan, and a few terms explain most of the confusion:
- Orthodontic lifetime maximum. Unlike your annual dental cleaning allowance, ortho coverage is usually a one-time pool per person, often somewhere in the range of $1,000 to $3,000. Once it is used, it does not refill each year.
- Coverage percentage. Many plans pay a set share of orthodontic treatment, commonly around 50 percent, up to that lifetime maximum.
- Age limits. A large number of plans only cover orthodontics for dependents under 18 or 19. Adult orthodontic coverage exists but is less common, so adults should confirm before assuming.
- Waiting periods. Some plans require you to be enrolled for several months to a year before orthodontic benefits begin.
Because these variables stack, two patients with the “same” treatment can owe very different amounts. That is normal, and it is exactly what we sort out before you commit to anything.
What to check on your plan
If you want to get ahead of it, call the member services number on your insurance card and ask:
- Do I have an orthodontic benefit, and does it cover clear aligners like Invisalign?
- What is my orthodontic lifetime maximum, and how much is left?
- What percentage is covered, and is there an age limit?
- Is there a waiting period before orthodontic benefits start?
Write down the answers and bring them to your consultation. Or skip the phone call: give us your insurance information and we will verify the benefits and explain what they mean in plain language.
Beyond insurance: other ways to pay
Insurance is only one piece. Most of our patients combine it with one or more of these:
- In-house, interest-free financing. We offer low down payments and convenient monthly plans spread across treatment, with no third-party interest.
- HSA and FSA dollars. Orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign, is a qualified medical expense, so pre-tax health savings and flexible spending accounts can be used toward your balance.
- Family and start-date planning. If you are timing treatment for more than one family member, we can help you sequence care to make the most of your benefits.

We handle the paperwork
You should not need a degree in insurance to straighten your teeth. Our treatment coordinator verifies your coverage, files your claims, and tells you your real out-of-pocket number before treatment begins, so there are no surprises later. If your plan does not include orthodontics, we will build a financing plan that fits your budget. Learn more about treatment itself on our Invisalign in San Diego page. Se habla español.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my insurance pay the same for Invisalign as for braces?
In almost all cases, yes. Plans with an orthodontic benefit apply it to clear aligners and braces alike, up to your lifetime maximum. The treatment you choose rarely changes what insurance pays.
Can I use an HSA or FSA for Invisalign in San Diego?
Yes. Orthodontic treatment is a qualified medical expense, so HSA and FSA funds can be applied to your treatment, often alongside insurance and our in-house financing.
What if I have no orthodontic coverage at all?
You still have options. We offer interest-free in-house financing with low down payments and monthly plans, and we will give you a clear total before you start.
