Orthodontic emergencies can be stressful, but knowing what to do can make all the difference. At Elite Orthodontics, we’re here to help patients in San Diego, CA handle unexpected issues with braces or orthodontic appliances safely and comfortably. Most orthodontic emergencies are manageable until you’re able to see us, and our team is always happy to guide you through the next steps.
What Is Considered an Orthodontic Emergency?
Orthodontic emergencies generally fall into two categories: issues with your orthodontic appliances or injuries involving your mouth and teeth. While many problems are not life-threatening, they should be addressed promptly to avoid discomfort or delays in treatment.
What Should I Do If My Braces or Appliance Are Causing a Problem?
If something breaks, bends, or feels uncomfortable with your braces or appliances, contact our office during regular business hours so we can schedule an appointment. Orthodontic emergencies require an appointment and cannot be handled on a walk-in basis.
In the meantime, here are some tips to manage common issues:
- If a wire is poking or irritating your mouth, cover it with orthodontic wax or gently push it under the main wire using a pencil eraser or the back of a spoon.
- If a bracket or band becomes loose, it’s usually okay to leave it in place until your visit. Call us so we can schedule a repair.
- If a wire is bothersome, you may be able to gently bend it back with a pencil eraser or clip the end with clean nail clippers. If you’re unsure, call our office for guidance.
What If I Experience an Injury to My Mouth or Teeth?
If you experience trauma to your mouth or teeth due to an accident or injury:
- Apply ice immediately to reduce swelling.
- Contact your family dentist as soon as possible, as they may need to take X-rays or provide urgent dental care.
- If a tooth is knocked out, cracked, or shifted, your dentist is the first one to do so, as they have the necessary tools and anesthesia.
If your braces or orthodontic appliances are damaged during the injury, notify Elite Orthodontics after your dental visit. We’ll coordinate repairs once your dentist confirms it’s safe to proceed.
What Should I Do If an Emergency Happens After Office Hours?
