Meet Dr. Freda

ORTHODONTIST & DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDIST

My journey in orthodontics began in third grade, when I fractured my front teeth during a school game. That accident led to early braces to protect my smile and help correct a childhood lisp. Being the first kid in my class with braces shaped how I understood confidence, speech, and the impact a smile can have on a child’s life.

I chose orthodontics because I love working with people, building relationships, and creating confident, healthy smiles that can truly change lives. I feel incredibly grateful for the trust patients place in me, and I’m honored to help them on their journey.

Background and Education

I grew up in Buffalo, New York, in a close, supportive family that encouraged curiosity, discipline, and compassion. I attended Syracuse University on a full academic scholarship before returning home for dental school at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. I graduated second in my class and was inducted into the predominant dental honor society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon. I fell in love with orthodontics—the blend of biomechanics, artistry, and meaningful patient relationships.

This passion for orthodontics brought me to New York City for orthodontic residency at Montefiore Medical Center. My training included craniofacial and surgical orthodontics, clear aligners, digital workflows, and interdisciplinary care. I was honored to receive the Leo M. Davidoff Award for Excellence in Teaching, and to represent my program at the AAO Political Action Committee Annual Session in Washington, D.C.

After residency, I moved to San Diego to match my love for the outdoors and an active lifestyle. I am now a licensed orthodontist treating children and adults with personalized, compassionate, and leading-edge care.

Dr. John Freda is a Board-Certified Orthodontist recognized by the American Board of Orthodontics, providing care for both children and adults.

The American Board of Orthodontics is the oldest and one of the most respected specialty boards in dentistry. Earning board certification means an orthodontist voluntarily completes a rigorous evaluation by peers, demonstrating advanced knowledge, clinical skill, and a commitment to ongoing excellence.

Community Engagement

My favorite dental school experience was a mission trip to La Romana, Dominican Republic through Remote Area Medical (RAM).
