Enjoying Your Orthodontic Results Forever
The success of your orthodontic treatment can last a lifetime, but it depends on your commitment to following key guidelines:

Understanding Removable Retainers
After your journey with braces concludes, you’ll transition to retainers to maintain your new smile. It’s crucial during the initial months post-braces as your teeth and surrounding tissues adapt to their new positions. Wearing your retainers as instructed is vital; neglecting them could lead to your teeth shifting back, potentially requiring further treatment.
Hawley Retainer
Traditional retainer and made of acrylic and stainless steel wires.
Clear Retainer
Made of clear plastic and looks like a clear aligner, such as Invisalign®.
Wearing Your Retainers
Teeth have a natural tendency to move throughout life, so wearing retainers is a long-term commitment. Initially, you should wear your retainer full-time for a year after your braces come off. After that, you can switch to nighttime wear to accommodate the growth of wisdom teeth and preserve your alignment. Dr. Ehsani will continue to monitor your progress and the development of your wisdom teeth, scheduling follow-ups and recommending X-rays as needed.
Once a decision is made regarding your wisdom teeth, wearing your retainer at least once a week during the night is recommended to counteract any natural shifting due to aging or muscle changes.
Caring for Your Retainers
Retainers need love, too! They’re crafted from a thermoplastic material that dislikes heat, so keep them cool and away from pets who might see them as chew toys. Cleaning your retainers is easy: a soft toothbrush with mild soap does the trick, and a denture cleaner can tackle any stubborn buildup. Remember, keep them rinsed and clean, storing them in their case when not in use.
If your retainers wear out or get lost, let us know—while the first set is covered, replacements due to neglect will incur a fee.
About Fixed Retainers
A bonded wire retainer is your smile’s secret guardian, ideally lasting a lifetime unless dental professionals advise otherwise due to hygiene concerns. If removal is necessary, we’ll switch you to a removable retainer as per Dr. Ehsani’s guidance. Regular dental check-ups will ensure this retainer stays effective and clean.
Special Retention Cases
Some situations, like mouth breathing, teeth grinding, or certain oral habits, might necessitate extra retention efforts to keep your teeth in line.
Your Role in Dental Health
Continuing good oral hygiene practices at home and regular dental visits every six months for cleanings and exams will ensure your smile remains healthy and bright.
Together, we’ll keep your smile looking great for a lifetime, but we need your help to make it happen!
